As a local family-owned company serving our community, Johnston Fence Contracting is proud to provide year round fence installation, emergency storm repairs, and commercial fencing services across Simcoe County and surrounding areas.
After last winter’s record ice storm, we took a hard look at how we operate — strengthening our systems, expanding our crews, and improving communication so our neighbours, businesses, and community partners can count on us when it matters most. We’d like to reflect on this past record breaking winter season and what we’ve learned as a result.

Lessons Learned From the Ice Storm
Pressure revealed what needed to change
A Perfect Storm of Demand and Transition
The ice storm struck during a period of significant growth and internal change for our company. At the same time as we were navigating administrative and operational transitions, we experienced an unprecedented surge in emergency calls — layered on top of a record breaking fence installation season.
Our field crews were responding to storm damage around the clock, often in hazardous conditions involving unstable trees, ice loaded structures, and restricted access sites.
At the same time, our communications and administrative teams were overwhelmed by the sheer volume of inbound requests, follow ups, scheduling changes, and emergency coordination required.
The result was clear in hindsight
- Our crews were delivering at full capacity in the field
- Our systems were not yet built to handle emergency level volume
- Communication delays impacted customer experience
- Our Google reviews reflected frustration during a crisis driven workload
Turning Pressure Into Progress
Much like municipalities, utilities, and emergency services across the region, the storm revealed both strengths and gaps…and the most critical lesson was clear:
"Strong field response must be matched with equally strong communication and coordination."
We took that seriously.
